Net Zero Buildings and Sustainability

Note:Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is working with World Green Building Council (WGBC) in developing a tool for the assessment of net zero energy buildings in the country.

Net Zero buildings

Future Buildings, Green Buildings and Sustainability

- Net zero can be either Net zero energy buildings or Net zero carbon buildings or both, Zet Zero Buildings

- Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) would lead the future of net zero buildings in India

- Future is of net zero buildings and it is also important as government of almost all nations has taken decision to reduce reduce temperature by 2 oC

-Study on net zero building reveals, there would be huge demand of Net Zero Building professional by 2030 and 2050. As various institutions & organizations have taken decision to develop guidelines for Net Zero Building Certification

What technicality is required in designing/ developing Net Zero Buildings (energy & carbon)
1. In depth knowledge of the subjects such as

- Detailed site study - Understand the needs and requirement and how to meet
Study of climate, parameters that affect energy requirement

- Energy simulation

- Building Material

- Use of glass as a strategic measure for Daylight, visual comfort and also to reduce load on artificial lighting

- Use of lighting, energy and IEQ controls

- Energy, Lighting, IEQ Standards and Protocols, to optimise energy and provide excellent daylight provision

- Strategic implementation of Energy Efficiency Measures

- Energy Optimization

- Renewable Energy optimisation

- Building Performance Analysis and Monitoring to diagnose and detect fault in HVAC equipment and also take preventive measures

- Design for comfort cooling, take measures of thermal adaptation

- Passive technologies and selection based on site, climate, building type and building use

- CFD Simulation, how air shall be pumped and quantity to recirculate

- Close the design loop, design in such a way so that design decision can be met

- How to built green and carbon neutral

- Study of energy used in water lifting, usages etc.

- Water conservation, with respect to energy

Definition of nZERO Building (nZB)

NZEB generates as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year through the deployment of energy efficient building design and technologies, and generation of on-site energy through systems utilizing solar power, urban waste, biomass, geothermal energy, etc.

At the heart of the net-zero energy building definition is the idea that the building can meet all its energy requirements from cost-effective, locally available renewable energy sources

This initiative was started by BEE and USAID ECO-III to promote NZEBs in India. Objective of nZB is to reduce the demand of power infrastructure in India and to assist policymakers and stakeholders to direct efforts and resources over the next 5 to 10 years so that these could facilitate the development of a NZEB program for the country.
